How to use this checklist

Clean once the home is empty, top to bottom in each room, then work through the last list before you hand back the keys.

  1. Read your lease first. Some leases ask for specific things, like professional carpet cleaning or the fridge left running. Do those first.
  2. Wait until it's empty. You can't clean a closet or a floor that still has boxes in it. Schedule the clean after the movers.
  3. Work top to bottom. Dust fans, shelves and sills before you do floors, so nothing falls on a clean floor.
  4. Photograph everything. Take dated photos of every room once you're done. That's your record.
